Water Damage Phone Repair: What to Do in the First 24 Hours
Dropped your phone in the toilet, a puddle, a pool, or had a drink spill on it? What you do in the next 24 hours matters more than almost anything else for whether it fully recovers or ends up needing a much bigger repair.
Minute one: power it off immediately, and do it properly — a long-press of the power button, not a string of random button presses trying to see if the screen still works. Every extra second the phone stays powered on with water inside risks a short circuit across components that would otherwise have been fine.
Do not plug it in to charge, and do not plug in any cable at all, even to check if it is responding. Running current through a wet board is one of the most common ways a recoverable phone turns into one with real corrosion damage.
Dry the outside gently with a soft cloth and tip the phone to help any trapped water drain from the charging port and speaker grilles. Skip the hairdryer, the oven, the car dashboard, and the sunny windowsill — heat does not evaporate the moisture that is already inside; it just pushes it further into the device and can warp the battery or screen adhesive.
Skip the rice too. It is the most common piece of advice out there and it does not really work — rice is a poor desiccant compared to proper drying agents, and rice dust can get lodged in ports and speakers, making things worse rather than better.
The part that actually matters: get it to a technician within 24 hours for ultrasonic cleaning and a proper internal inspection, before any corrosion has a chance to set in. Corrosion is progressive — a phone that would have been a straightforward clean on day one can turn into a board-level repair, or become unrecoverable, by day two or three.
